Because flannel shirts need to be patterned, they are designed to weave multi-colored yarns. The warp threads move up and down in a complex pattern, while shuttles carrying different colored weft threads move back and forth between them, alternating between the two.\u003cbr\u003eIn this way, flannel is woven with the just the right amount of tension typical of a power loom, and the unevenness inherent in each thread is preserved.\u003cbr\u003eThe finished flannel fabric is brushed on the back, following the same method as back then.\u003cbr\u003eBrushing gives the pattern a soft look.
